Farmers with poultry barns are in great need of a method to euthanize irrecoverably sick, paralyzed or crippled poultry quickly, effectively and in a manner that is completely painless and stress-free for the animals. The H2H Euthanizer meets all these conditions and has been scientifically tested. H2H stands for ‘head to heart’ and concisely conveys the unique principle behind this device: stress-free euthanasia with electricity.
When the start button is pressed a 230V/50Hz electric current passes through the body. With this effective ‘head to heart’ method the animal is rendered immediately unconscious by the administered electric current. This method leads irreversibly to death.
The animal is supported, head down, in a flexible cone. The head is held in place by two electrode plates, positioned by a lever. An electrode is simultaneously placed on the cloaca. This is a manual action that can be performed quickly and without stress for the animal.
For the euthanasia of irrecoverably sick, paralyzed or crippled poultry in the poultry holding there is a need for practical methods that farmers can use themselves. In response to this need, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality sought expert advice. The expert group recommended various euthanasia methods for different groups of animals. For the on-farm euthanasia of poultry, electrocution is a recommended method.
Conditions for euthanasia by electrical current are that the current administered must flow through both the brain and the heart. The current intensity must also be sufficient to make the method irreversible. The H2H Euthanizer meets all these conditions. This allows poultry to be killed immediately in a controlled manner.
The effectiveness and operation of the H2H Euthanizer have been extensively studied by Wageningen University & Research. Use of the H2H Euthanizer is only permitted in light industrial environments, such as poultry holdings. The H2H Euthanizer may only be operated by qualified employees.
